Plans to hold Holiday meals for the hungry are in doubt this year for a Santa Cruz veterans group. The United Veterans council announced Sunday that the closure of the VFW building on Santa Cruz’s Front Street will prevent the local post from holding the events. VFW post 5888 has been holding the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for the past 24 years. County supervisors decided to close the Front Street building in January, to make repairs. Finding other locations has been difficult, however Santa Cruz County leaders are looking to the Civic Auditorium as a possible place to hold the charity meals. A lawsuit regarding the closure of the VFW building is set to be heard next month. The building remains closed as County leaders try to come up with 1.3-million dollars to make repairs.
