The Gilroy Fire department will now be hiring more firefighters after receiving a grant this week from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA. According to Gilroy Fire Officials, the money will be used to fill six positions that were cut last year during city layoffs. The money will go towards hiring new firefighters since the 6 who were laid off are currently employed by other agencies. The total amount of the grant, which part of the SAFER program is over $2,343,000.
