With the statewide ban rejected by legislators, a number of county supervisors around the state, including Santa Cruz county, plan to create their own rules about plastic bags. Local leaders say they’ll work on prohibitions on plastic carry-out bags. They further said that the plastic bags are not only an environmental hazard, they also cost a lot of money to collect, and they take up a lot of space in landfills.
