SB 1166-CONSUMER PRIVACY PROTECTION 08-20-10 05:40 a.v.

A bill designed to promote consumer privacy protection has made it through the Legislature, and is now headed to the governor’s desk for approval. Senate Bill 11-66, sponsored by State Senator Joe Simitian, a Democrat from Palo Alto, specifies what companies must do when consumer data and personal information is breached. Current law requires companies to notify consumers, but it DOESN’T say what the companies must tell consumers. According to Simitian, Senate Bill 11-66 takes “the next logical step” by specifying what information must be included in the notification, so that individuals might take steps to protect themselves against identity theft.
