A Santa Cruz man has been sentenced to 30-hours of community service, after being found guilty of participating in an event without a permit. Wes Modes was ordered to perform the community service, rather than pay a 250-dollar fine, due to his role in organizing an unsanctioned New Year’s Parade. Modes, who belongs to a local anarchist group, maintains that the parade is a spontaneous gathering. Modes cannot perform the community service at Subrosa Café, a local coffee shop that he co-founded.
