Elkhorn oysters 7/29/10 TDH

The last sections of an artificial oyster-reef were put in place at elkhorn slough yesterday(thurs).   The influx of olympia oysters is designed to help the shell-fish return in force to the slough, where they were once abundant.   Over-fishing, along with pollution and invasive species, nearly wiped out the oysters.  Graduate students at ucsc, are now helping researchers at elkhorn slough national estuary research reserve build the reefs, in an effort to help the oysters recover.
