A 5-alarm blaze, that destroyed an elementary school in West San Jose early this morning, has been contained. Fire fighters responded to the blaze at 4:15 a.m. to find the majority of Merritt Trace Elementary, located at 651 Dana Avenue, engulfed in flames. The fire, which destroyed the majority of the building that included offices, classrooms, a library, a computer center and a cafeteria, threatened to destroy portable units located about 20-feet from the main building. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze by 7 a.m., the cause remains under investigation, meanwhile, one firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was hospitalized as a safety pre-caution.
