The Santa Cruz Homeless Services Center plans to turn a long-vacant house into new, long-term housing for those transitioning out of homeless shelters and in need of inexpensive apartments. Late last month, the center paid $825-thousand-dollars for the two-story house at the corner of River and Coral Streets.
That’s almost across the street from another Homeless Services Center property, which might house residents preparing to move into the new housing.
Plans are for the house to be converted into six or seven single bedroom units that would be federal subsidy-eligible or otherwise affordable housing. Center officials say the units could become available in about a year.
Financing is being provided by Santa Cruz County Bank and the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.
