The first restoration of Native American lands in the Big Sur area has taken place. The Esselen Tribe has recovered nearly 1200 acres of ancestral land that lies on the north side of the Little Sur River. The property is known as Rancho Aguila.
The tribe plans to build a sweat lodge and traditional village (to conduct traditional ceremonies and teach the public about their culture). There will be no permanent homes or businesses on the land.
