The body of the National Guard Airman who was swept into the ocean near Big Sur yesterday has been recovered. The Monterey County Sheriff dive team discovered the body around 11:15 a.m. this morning, just 10 meters offshore from where the 24-year-old disappeared near Sobrantes Point at Garrapata State Beach. Rescue boats and helicopters searched for the airman for seven hours before calling off their search last night.
A coastal hazard advisory is currently in effect, warning visitors at beaches from Point Reyes to Big Sur of sneaker waves and rip currents. The advisory will remain in effect through tomorrow.
