“MyShake” app triggered for first time 12-18-19 17:00 DC

California’s new earthquake early warning smartphone app, called MyShake,  issued its first public alert Tuesday when a magnitude 4.3 quake shook the mountains between the central coast and the San Joaquin Valley.

The app was developed by UC Berkeley and released in October. Developers said more than 40 people received the alert. One of its thresholds is magnitude 4.5 and Tuesday’s quake initially registered 4.8 before its magnitude was recalculated and reduced to the 4.3 magnitude, after the alert has been triggered.

The free app is available for iOS and Android devices.
