According to a study conducted by UC Santa Cruz, mountain lions in higher elevations are found to have three times the amount of mercury in comparison to the felines located inland.
This is due to coastal fog carrying mercury from the ocean and into the mountains, which can prove lethal for mountain lions as it is stored in their fat.
Per the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, there are approximately 5,000 pumas in California.
