Santa Clara County planning commissioners have given approval to the proposed construction of an Islamic Center in San Martin. Some objected to the idea, saying that groundwater contamination could be an issue. However, supporters of the project say that studies show no such risk. The project will now go before Santa Clara’s Board of Supervisors for final approval. If the project is given the go-ahead, it will result in a 5,000 square foot mosque, and 2,800 square foot multipurpose room, and a cemetery being built on a 15-acre stretch along the Monterey highway.
