You don’t see them but there are more sharks in Monterey Bay than is usual for this time of year. Helicopter and other pilots can see the sharks, sometimes in groups of 30 and not far from beaches. Swimmers can’t see the sharks.
Dave Ebert of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory says much of the increase is in young, smaller sharks, those in the 5-to-7-foot range.
Ebert says that statistically, people are safer from shark attacks than ever before since shark attacks in California have failed to keep up with population increases.
