Monterey SPCA Update 08-25-20 17:37 DC

Yesterday was a good day, relative to the larger situation. With evacuation orders being lifted in our community, owners began redeeming their pets from our off-site sheltering locations. As I think you know, the SPCA had to evacuate our campus and quickly create off-site sheltering facilities at the Monterey County Fairgrounds and other locations. Fortunately, we planned for this scenario far ahead.

I can’t begin to explain the emotions involved in reuniting people with their pets — pets we’ve kept safe this past week. Owners are exhausted and grateful. These reunions are continuing today and buoying our spirits.

Still, the SPCA’s work is not close to being done. Some people can’t get back into their homes, fires are far from contained and possibly moving to communities. We are getting calls about animals behind fire lines, and we are providing food and water and rescuing animals when allowed by fire personnel. Some pet owners have tragically lost their homes and we are here for them, too.

It’s staggering to think about the 1,200+ animals’ lives we’ve touched in the past few days. We’ve fielded thousands of calls and brought comfort to so many people. During the devastating Soberanes Fire, we cared for 200 animals, and that wasn’t during a global pandemic. Our vital care and rescue work isn’t limited to dogs and cats. We’ve helped hundreds of horses and chickens, goats, llamas, ducks, geese, pigs, birds, and tortoises. This is what makes your SPCA unlike any other.

Our community is also unique; we can only do this work because of your compassionate and generous support. We know you will continue to be here for us, so we can continue helping so many animals and people through this disaster. Any level of support today is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and please stay safe!
