In Monterey, an effort is underway to provide services for the homeless rather than moving them from place to place.
An outreach team made up of a combination of law enforcement, social services and behavioral services is hitting the streets. Monterey police officers make an effort to get to know the homeless on a first name basis and are able to develop a relationship of trust… the next step is getting them help from county services.
Often times, officers will go out with a social worker and they work together in finding a shelter option and treatment.
