State funding is being sought for a Monterey county building that was granted historic status because farmworker labor leader Cesar Chavez was once incarcerated there. The 90 year-old Monterey County Jail building is located on West Alisal Street in Salinas. The members of the Monterey County Board Of Supervisors have agreed to hold-off on choosing what to do with the structure, until it is known how much state funding the county may be able to get (to support this project). One local legislator called the structure a “very significant site for the farm worker rights movement.”
