There is now a Lifeguard Tower on Monastery Beach, which is considered one of the deadliest beaches on the Monterey Bay. The lifeguard on duty is there to not only rescue people who get into trouble, but to keep people from putting themselves in a dangerous position to begin with. Lifeguards are taught to call the fireboat before they go into the water to rescue anyone….and then to swim the person past the shore break so as to meet the fireboat in calmer waters.
