The blaze broke out July 13 and burned an area roughly the size of San Francisco. Full containment is expected Tuesday.
The remote area that straddles the Monterey/Fresno County line has a colorful history; in the 1850’s legend has it that outlaw Joaquin Murrieta stashed thousands of dollars there which have never been found.
In 1948 it was also the site of a plane crash that killed 32 people… most of them migrant workers being deported to Mexico.
