a new report was released yesterday regarding the importance of agriculture in the economic health of monterey county. researchers examined not only data about annual crop production (and the direct monetary yield from that), but also the so-called “multiplier effects” of added spenDing (that COMES FROM THAT MONEY).
MONTEREY COUNTY AGRICULTURE CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN 5 BILLION DOLLARS IN DIRECT ECONOMIC OUTPUT, AND A LITTLE MORE THAN 3 BILLION DOLLARS IN ADDED SPENDING (PUTTING MORE THAN 8 BILLION DOLLARS INTO THE LOCAL ECONOMY LAST YEAR)….AND THAT DOESN’T EVEN TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE GROCERIES AND ENTERTAINMENT THAT AG WORKERS AND PRODUCERS BUY, OR THE TAXES THEY PAY.
THE REPORT WAS PUT TOGETHER BY 2 ECONOMISTS FROM THE MONTEREY INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (IN MONTEREY).
