May 8, 2016: Central Coast Tree Disease

(10:18) SANTA CRUZ- Central Coast Oak trees have possibly the highest rate of Sudden Oak Death in the state.  The disease, which is thought to have been introduced to the area in the 90’s by the nursery industry, has killed over a million trees and could potentially infect 2 billion oaks on the California coast. Researchers say that El Nino rains are partially responsible for the high mortality rates on the Central Coast. A planned workshop in Santa Cruz, on how to combat the spread of Sudden Oak Death will be announced toward the end of the month.
