A desalination project in the Marina Coast Water District is at risk of being shut down after being refused funding. The $470,000 that had previously been set aside for the project was may not be approved by the Fort Ord Reuse Authority. The agency’s board members said they may withdraw the funds in response to the district’s efforts to stop Cal Am from conducting test well work. Cal Am itself is planning on constructing a desalination plant, which is making the authority concerned about the Monterey Peninsula’s future water supply. District officials will meet tomorrow to discuss future options, before the authority votes again on the decision next month.
