A MAJOR EARTH QUAKE STRUCK THE BAY AREA, DESTROYING BUILDINGS, RUPTURING GAS LINES, AND INJURING SCORES OF PEOPLE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE QUAKE, MEASURING 6.1 ON THE RICTHER SCALE, HIT AT 3:20 A-M, BETWEEN AMERICAN CANYON AND NAPA, AND WAS FELT AS FAR SOUTH AS SANTA CRUZ. THE 30 SECOND TEMBLOR INJURED AT LAST 87 PEOPLE IN NAPA, AS WELL LEVELED SEVERAL BUILDINGS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. ADDITIONAL DWELLINGS WERE DESTROYED BY FIRES FUELED BY BROKEN GAS LINES, BROKEN WATER MAINS MADE FIGHTING THE BLAZES IMPOSSIBLE IN SEVERAL CASES. THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL ALSO REPORTS DAMAGE AND PARTIAL CLOSURES TO HIGHWAY 37, AND ROUTES 12 AND121, WHILE INITIAL P-G-and E ESTIMATES PUT POWER OUTAGES AT ABOUT 50-THOUSAND HOUSEHOLDS.
