SCIENTIST AT THE MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM RESEARCH INSTITUTE ARE STUDYING THE EFFECTS OF SUNKEN SHIPPING CONTAINERS ON DEEP SEA LIFE. JUST MONTHS AFTER A CARGO VESSEL LOST DOZENS OF THE LARGE STEEL CONTAINERS IN THE MARINE SANCTUARY DURING A STORM IN 2004, A ROBOTIC SUB DISCOVERED 1 OF THEM AT OVER 4 THOUSAND FEET DEEP. IN 2011 RESEARCHERS SENT A SUB BACK TO THE CONTAINER TO DOCUMENT ITS EFFECTS ON THE DEEP SEA HABITAT, AND FOUND SIGNS OF REEF LIFE ON THE WELL PRESERVED CARGO BOX. FUTURE PERIODIC MISSIONS ARE PLANNED TO THE CONTAINER.
