THE PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD IS OPEN ON THE UPDATED LAND MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR PORTIONS OF THE LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST (AND 3 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NATIONAL FORESTS). PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEIGH-IN ON A PROPOSAL TO RE-ZONE NEAR 300 THOUSAND ACRES AS “BACKCOUNTRY, NON-MOTORIZED”….WHICH WOULD MEAN THAT PEOPLE COULD HIKE, CAMP, AND BIKE THERE, BUT NOT DEVELOP THE AREA, OR DRIVE MOTORIZED VEHICLES IN THAT ZONE. THE DEADLINE FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS IS MAY 16TH.
THE LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST INCLUDES NEARLY 1.8 MILLION ACRES. IF APPROVED, THE NEW DESIGNATION WOULD EFFECT ABOUT 1-QUARTER OF THE NATIONAL FOREST.
