Walnut Street in downtown Santa Cruz was the setting for the areas first ever ‘waiters race’ yesterday afternoon. Waiters from area restaurants gathered on the closed off street to compete in a relay race held in honor of the 10th anniversary of the wine bar and restaurant Soif. Judges gave points while waiters carried trays of water filled glasses around a course which required them to pick up a napkin from the ground and roll silverware. The restaurants in the competition paid an entry fee in the form of a $100 gift certificate to be donated to an upcoming auction held by the Second Harvest Food Bank. The team from Hollins House took first prize, with Stockton Bridge Grill coming in second and 99 Bottles receiving a People’s Choice award.
