THE ANNUAL JUNETEENTH (june-teenth) CELEBRATION TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON, AT LOUDEN NELSON CENTER PARK,  IN DOWNTOWN SANTA CRUZ. THE CELEBRATION IS A TRADITION AMONGST BLACK-AMERICAN COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.  IT COMMEMORATES JUNE 19TH, 1865,  THE YEAR THAT UNION GENERAL GORDON GRANGER CAME INTO GALVESTON, TEXAS, WITH THE INFORMATION THAT THE CIVIL WAR WAS OVER AND SLAVERY WAS ABOLISHED. THE DATE WAS CELEBRATED OFF AND ON OVER THE DECADES, UNTIL IT WAS DEEMED A NATIONAL HOLIDAY BY THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE IN 1980. THE YOUNG AND ELDERLY, OF ALL RACES,  WERE PRESENT TO ENJOY FOOD, GAMES,  AND LOTS OF MUSIC.  THE SANTA CRUZ VERSION OF THIS HOLIDAY HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE SINCE 1983.
