UCSC Officials Respond to Crimes 2/21/13 11.30a AF

University officials and local law enforcement held a meeting last night addressing concerns about the recent crime wave to hit near UCSC.      The event was held in response to the recent rape of one woman, attempted murder of another and armed robbery of a grocery store within 3 miles of the campus.     The meeting was led by vice chancellor of business and administrative services Sarah Latham, with UCSC Police Chief Nader Oweis and Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark.     Oweis told students that only pepper spray is allowed on campus as a safety tool, and that night patrols will be increased.    Campus police will also begin a night escort service for students.     A $5,000 reward is being offered to information that leads to the arrest of the rape suspect.
