More Needles Found in Santa Cruz 2/12/13 8.30a AF
Another cluster of syringes was found during a cleanup effort in Pogonip this weekend. The Clean Team, a group of more than 50 volunteers and Santa Cruz City park rangers organized the cleanup of illegal campsites in the area. On Sunday, a campsite filled with piles of dirty clothing, trash and syringes was found near Encinal and DuBois Streets. Nearly 150 syringes were collected by the Santa Cruz Police Department after the cleanup team called to alert them. The Clean Team reports that in the past three months they have collected more than 750 needles assumed to be for drug use throughout Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz City Council is scheduled to vote at their meeting this afternoon whether to implement a more rigorous system of regulation on needle exchange programs in the area.
