A man who escaped from custody in 2010 and caused an armed standoff near domincan hospital has been found guilty of attempted murder and other charges. Maurice lamont ainsworth escaped after being transferred from santa cruz county jail to Dominican, to undergo a medical procedure. As soon as he was unshackled, Ainsworth assaulted a santa cruz county sheriff’s deputy and escaped from the grounds. He broke into a nearby preschool and held the teacher at gunpoint, before fleeing to a nearby residence. Ainsworth was finally arrested without further incident, and nobody in the preschool was injured. the deputy also sustained a taser shot to the head in the pursuit, but she has since recovered. Ainsworth was convicted of 39
of the 42 counts aginst him, which included kidnapping, assault on a peace officer, and other crimes.
