Prelimnary Hearing Set for Man Who Choked Barista 1/2/13 10a AF

A preliminary hearing has been set for a man charged with felony assault on a coffee shop employee in Santa Cruz.     47-year-old Winston Churchill was arrested on December 22nd at Verve Coffee Roaster on Pacific Avenue after he refused to leave the business.   The following day, Churchill returned to the coffee shop where he allegedly tried to choke an employee with his own tie in the restroom of the business.   When a customer intervened, the assailant allegedly head-butted the man and elbowed him in the ribs.   Churchill was in court on Monday where he reportedly yelled at his public defender and was upset about being denied release from jail.    Churchill’s preliminary hearing has been set for January 7th.
