Fire safety tips 12/31/12 9:15a.m. TDH
As winter hits full stride, and temperatures on the central coast are down, cal-fire officials are urging residents to remember fire safety tips, especially when using candles and heaters. According to cal-fire, December results in more fires started by candles than any other month. Some tips include not leaving candles unattended for long periods of time, and using sturdy candle-holders. Always make sure there is enough clearance between a candle and anything else—12 inches is recommended. An even greater distance is recommended by cal-fire for heaters. Fire officials recommend keeping anything flammable at least 3-feet away from a furnace or any other heater. Always turn portable heaters off when leaving a room or going to sleep.
