Mco school seek independence 09/06/12 5 p.m. TDH

Officials at 4 monterey county school districts are seeking to separate from the monterey county office of education.   leaders at monterey peninsula unified school district, salinas union high, salinas city elementary, and alisal union school districts have all asked to become what’s called “fiscally accountable.”   The change would sever ties with the county in financial areas.  many of those areas, (like payroll accounting), have been handled somewhat independently in the past, but a new software program being implemented county-wide has led the 4 district boards to opt-out.  Those districts want to retain their own software programs.    Pending independent audits, a decision is expected to be made by march of next year.
