A SANTA CRUZ CROSSWALK WHERE A MAN WAS STRUCK BY A CAR AND KILLED IN 2009 IS SET TO UNDERGO SAFETY UPGRADES THIS YEAR. A 50-THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT FROM THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION DEVELOPMENT ACT WILL FUND THE SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE LAUREL STREET CROSSWALK. THE PLAN FOR THE CROSSWALK INCLUDES CONSTRUCTING A RAISED MEDIAN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, AND ALSO TO ADD LEFT TURN LANES TO PREVENT VEHICLES FROM SWERVING AROUND CARS THAT HAVE STOPPED TO TURN. A 60-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS STRUCK AND KILLED IN THE CROSSWALK IN NOVEMBER OF 2009.
