SEMPERVIRENS FUND WANTS TO CONVERT THE FORMER CEMEX INDUSTRIAL PLANT IN DAVENPORT INTO A PROTECTED NATURAL RESERVE. THOUGH THE LAND-TRUST DOESN’T NORMALLY WORK IN RE-PURPOSING CONTAMINATED INDUSTRIAL LAND, IT HAS RECEIVED A 10-THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT FROM THE CENTER FOR CREATIVE LAND RECYCLING TO LOOK INTO THE POLLUTION PROBLEM. CEMEX IS NEGOTIATING WITH SANTA CRUZ COUNTY ON A PLANT CLOSURE PLAN, WHICH WON’T LIKELY BE APPROVED UNTIL NEXT YEAR. CEMEX SAYS IT WON’T ENTER NEGOTIATIONS WITH INTERESTED BUYERS UNTIL IT’S PLAN WITH THE COUNTY IS FINALIZED.
