The following is a KSCO commentary. Here is Kay Zwerling:
In our democratic society, how come the manner in which we elect our most important leader for the Presidency is not democratic?
Whichever politician believes he or she has the wherewithal to be the leader of the greatest and most powerful country on our planet, that person must soon come to the realization that the only requirement is to have a war chest of around $100 million.
This system must have been in place for so long that no one seems to question it. It surely could not have been the norm when our country was new.
True, George Washington was a wealthy, and much loved patriot, so was Abraham Lincoln loved and worthy, but he was very poor, and he became President.
At what point in our history did we exclude presidential candidates who may have been wonderful leaders while we looked only to those few who had lots of money, but otherwise would not have been considered as Presidents at all? That’s where we are now.
The cost of running for public office went up rapidly once TV became the perfect vehicle to showcase candidates.
Let’s take Hillary Clinton – actually let’s not. She has been a Presidential wannabe since she moved into the White House.
Remember that foolish campaign wording of “You’ll get two for the price of one.” Whoever wanted Hillary in the first place?
Her only credential is that she’s a woman, and that’s not good enough. She has accomplished nothing to make herself a viable candidate for the Presidency, except that she has a war chest of over $100 million dollars. And oh yeah, she claims it takes a village to raise a child. That’s nonsense.
Some Democrats started the rumor that she is smartest woman in the world, and that’s a crock, too.
No wonder we wind up with mediocre leaders much of the time. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was pretty good though he was a racist. He couldn’t find room in our country for a ship load of Holocaust immigrants so he sent them back to Germany to die. Harry Truman the haberdasher was a simple honest courageous man who truly meant it when he said “The buck stops here.” As Vice President, he inherited the Presidency when Roosevelt died. He had integrity and respect for the office. He had the courage to make the agonizing decision to end the war in Japan, saving many thousands of lives. His decision heralded in the atomic age.
Back to Hillary – an empty suit, a contrived and staged creature who lives by the polls just like Bill did. Her magnum opus was her government health plan and it was a disaster, and was discarded by the entire Congress. She was a committed liar who wouldn’t remember anything while under oath. She lied about her questionable documents while with the Rose law firm, and mysteriously had them brought forth anonymously many months later. She and Bill helped themselves to furniture and other treasures that weren’t nailed down when they left the White House, and when ordered to return the furniture and artwork, they did so shamelessly. And now they both want another eight years in the White House? God help us. Their greatest flaw is their arrogance and underestimation of the intelligence of We The People.
While it surely won’t happen, the honest democratic way to obtain Presidential material may be with government rules where candidates are not permitted to use their own money to campaign or to be beholden to whomever supplies them with the money. Rather each candidate should be given the same amount of government funds, and possibly be chosen to run by their own State constituency. That would seem to be a more level playing field, and then may the best one for the job win, instead of the one with the most millions.
By the way, when you go to the polls, remember that recently 34 Senators, all Democrats including Obama and Hillary, and Independent Joe Lieberman, all voted against having English as the official American language. Isn’t it time to initiate term limits in Congress?
Also, a whopping 51 Senators voted to give illegal aliens Social Security, most were Democrats, and also included were John McCain, Joe Lieberman, and our two California Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. Again, why oh why don’t we have term limits? No one should make a lifetime career out of being in political office.
The entire population of the United States must know about this retirement giveaway, unless they don’t mind sharing their Social Security with foreign illegal workers who never paid a dime into the system. How disloyal that so many Senators are selling out our Country. Isn’t it definitely time for term limits?
