(10:00) SACRAMENTO – The legal age to buy cigarettes in California may be raised. On Tuesday California lawmakers passed SB151, which would raise the smoking age from 18 to 21. They also passed SB140, which would ban e-cigarettes in public spaces. These bills will advance to the Assembly. According to the Institute of Medicine raising the smoking age to 21 would cause the smoking rate to decrease by 12 percent. A number of cities including New York city have imposed laws raising the smoking age to 21, California and Hawaii are the only states in the process of doing this. (M.K.)
