June 2, 2015: Salinas Man Charged Stemming from Violent Confrontation with Police

(09:07) MONTEREY COUNTY – A Salinas man has been charged with assault and resisting arrest. Last month, 28-year-old Jose Velasco was detained after allegedly attacking his mother, Rita Ramirez. During his arrest, Velasco reportedly removed a police officer’s taser and assaulted a firefighter who was treating him. Community members have criticized the officers for using excessive force while apprehending Velasco. The DA’s Office reviewed the case and found insufficient evidence to prove any officer involved committed a crime. Velasco is due back in court today for arraignment. He faces up to five years in prison, if convicted. (S.G.)
