Judge Blocks CA Ammo Background Checks 04-24-20 03:30 DC

A U.S. district judge yesterday blocked a recent California law requiring background checks for people buying ammunition, The judge described the regulations as “onerous and convoluted” and said they violate the constitutional right to bear arms.

U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego ruled in favor of the California Rifle & Pistol Association, which had asked him to stop the checks and related restrictions on ammo sales.

Voters approved toughening California’s firearms laws in 2016, and the restrictions took effect last July.

The California attorney general’s office has not said if it will appeal or seek to stay the order, which took effect immediately.
