January 19, 2016: New Labor Laws In California

(19:28) CALIFORNIA – The California Fair Play Act went into effect January 1st, and (among other things) it expanded the equal pay protections intended to close ‘gender-based wage inequalities’. It also requires employers to keep records related to gender equity in wages for 3 years; and protects employees from being discharged (or discriminated against) for inquiring about their equal pay rights. The increase in the minimum wage also boosted the minimum monthly salary requirement for exempt employees. Set at two times the minimum wage for full-time employment, the new minimum salary requirement for exempt employees is $3,467 per month. The governor also signed AB 1506, a Farm Bureau-supported law.
