January 18, 2016: California Crab Fishing Season Remains Delayed

(08:24) CALIFORNIA – California crab fishing season remains delayed after new research points to increased toxicity. In November, the Department of Public Health issued a warning after finding dangerous levels of domoic acid in crab caught along the California coast. The state’s crab fishing season was subsequently delayed. The algal bloom that produced the toxin has since disappeared, however domoic acid is still being found in crab populations. Experts believe this is due to remaining algae that has sunk down to the seafloor where the crab feed. Scientists expect crab will be safe to fish by February. (S.G.)
