January 17, 2016: Cal Am Raising Rates

(18:10) MONTEREY- California American Water has filed an application with the Public Utility Commission to raise water rates for its Central Coast customers. At a meeting on Thursday Cal Am officials explained to attendees that the company has amassed a 40.6 million dollar deficit since water conservation began in 2010. The company applied for the rate hike to maintain its infrastructure. The plan would raise prices for the lowest water consumers, while lowering some bills in the higher tiers of usage. The average customer’s bill is expected to go from 50 to 64 dollars per month in November if the application is approved.
