January 14, 2016: California Coast Faces Increased Risk of Major Tsunami

(09:38) CALIFORNIA – The California Coast is facing an increased risk of a tsunami, according to new findings from the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency’s research points to a trench in Alaska that has been dormant for over 200 years. Scientists predict that when the trench ruptures, the resulting earthquake could send a major tsunami towards California. A USGS team has found another section of the trench whose rupture could bring a tsunami to Hawaii. Communities across the Central Coast are tsunami ready and have response plans in place. (S.G.)
