Evidence from religious texts dating from antiquity shows that lying and deception have been of concern to humans for millennia. Shakespeare said ‘Honesty is the best policy. If I lose mine honour, I lose myself’. None of us like to be lied to but have we become more accepting of deception? Is the truth still necessary to a successful society?
