The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Consumer Affairs Office is warning the public about a tax phone scam. Scammers continue to call Santa Cruz County residents posing as Internal Revenue Service agents, seeking immediate “tax penalty” payments over the phone. This scam is being reported nationwide and many have been fooled into making the payment. The IRS does not call taxpayers to make a payment over the phone. Those who have been targeted by the calls are encouraged to report them to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484 or online at treasury.gov/tigta.
