THE ROUNDTREE DETENTION CENTER IN WATSONVILLE HAS A NEW MURAL. OVER 20 INMATES IN THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FACILITY WORKED WITH LOCAL MURALIST ARTURO THOMAE (TOW-MAY) TO DESIGN AND PAINT A DEPICTION OF SANTA CRUZ COASTAL LIFE (INCLUDING A LIGHTHOUSE, A SHARK, AND WAVES) ON A 28-FOOT WALL IN THE CAFETERIA. THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN APRIL AND THE MURAL, DEDICATED TO FORMER ROUNDTREE COMMANDER LT. SHEA JOHNSON, WAS UNVEILED RECENTLY AT A SMALL CEREMONY.
THE PROJECT WAS FUNDED BY THE SANTA CRUZ ARTS COMMISSION AND THE WILLIAM JAMES ASSOCIATION’S PRISON ARTS PROJECT.
