IN A MOVE THAT WOULD CLOSE 2 LARGE AREAS OFF TO OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION, AND RESTRICT THE MOVEMENT OF CARGO SHIPS, AIRCRAFT, AND JET SKIS, FEDERAL OFFICIALS ARE PROPOSING TO MORE THAN DOUBLE THE SIZE OF 2 MARINE SANCTUARIES (ALONG THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COASTLINE). THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION WANTS TO EXPAND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE SANCTUARY IN THE GULF OF THE FARALLONES, AS WELL AS THE CORDELL BANK NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY. OFFICIALS WITH N-O-A-A SAY THE EXPANSIONS ARE NEEDED TO PROPERLY PROTECT WHALES, SHARKS, SALMON AND SEABIRDS THAT FEED IN THOSE REGIONS ALONG THE SONOMA AND MENDOCINO COUNTY COASTLINE.

A CIVIL SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACH BETWEEN CALIFORNIA AMERICAN WATER COMPANY (AKA CAL-AM) AND THE MONTEREY COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE. THE SUIT WAS BASED ON THE WATER COMPANY’S VIOLATIONS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE LAWS THAT STEMMED FROM HANDLING OF WASTE SLUDGE AT 3 OF ITS FACILITIES. CAL-AM HAS AGREED TO PAY NEARLY 400 THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE SETTLEMENT MONEY WILL GO TOWARD HELPING RURAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS PROSECUTE ENVIRONMENTAL CASES.

A NEARLY 6 THOUSAND ACRE PARCEL, JUST NORTH OF SANTA CRUZ, HAS BEEN DONATED TO THE PUBLIC. THE TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND HAS TRANSFERRED THE 5 THOUSAND 843 ACRE COAST DAIRIES PROPERTY TO THE U.S. BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT. BY THE END OF THIS YEAR, THE B-L-M HOPES TO HAVE 2 TRAILS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. ONE IS THE LIDDELL CREEK TRAIL OFF OF BONNY DOON ROAD, AND THE OTHER IS THE MOLINA PASTURE TRAIL OFF SWANTON ROAD.
