THE COUNTY OF SANTA CRUZ HAS ANNOUNCED THAT ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16TH , VALENCIA SCHOOL ROAD BETWEEN FERN FLAT ROADAND VALENCIA ROAD WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL JULY 11TH  FOR REPAIRS DUE TO STORM DAMAGE.   THE MOTORING PUBLIC IS ASKED TO AVOID THE AREA UNTIL THE PROJECT IS COMPLETE.

A SALINAS BUSINESS MAN CONVICTED OF INSURANCE FRAUD AND TAX EVASION WAS SENTENCED ON FRIDAY.    33 YEAR OLD RICARDO CASILLAS WAS SENTENCED TO 3-HUNDRED DAYS IN JAIL AND 10 YEARS PROBATION AFTER HE FAILED TO FILE PAYROLL TAX RETURNS IN ORDER TO EVADE TAXES, AND ALTERING INFORMATION TO OBTAIN A LOWER WORKERS COMPENSATION PREMIUM.    HE WAS ALSO ORDERED TO PAY 60-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN FINES AND OVER 300-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN RESTITUTION TO THE E-D-D.  ANOTHER RESTITUTION HEARING IS SET FOR APRIL 25TH.

A MOTORCYCLIST WAS KILLED ON HIGHWAY 9 SUNDAY MORNING.   SOURCES SAY THAT AROUND 11:15 A-M A GROUP OF MOTORCYCLES WERE SOUTHBOUND 6 MILES NORTH OF BOULDER CREEK.  WHEN A 29 YEAR OLD CAMPBELL MAN SWERVED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC, COLLIDING HEAD ON WITH A 1 VEHICLE, AND THEN WAS (BEING) HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE, HE WAS DECLARED DEAD AT THE SCENE.    A 2ND MOTORCYCLIST, A 63 YEAR OLD APTOS  MAN WAS AIR LIFTED TO A BAY AREA TRAUMA CENTER AFTER CRASHING INTO THE 1ST DOWNED MOTORCYCLE.   HIGHWAY 9 WAS CLOSED FOR OVER 2 HOURS AS THE C-H-P CLEARED THE ROADWAY , THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

A MOTORCYCLIST WAS KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT ON A CARMEL VALLEY ROADWAY SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THE ACCIDENT TOOK PLACE ON LAURELESS GRADE CLOSE TO CARMEL VALLEY ROAD. SOURCES SAY THAT AT AROUND 2:30 P-M, A WOMAN’S MOTORCYCLE CROSSED THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE STRIKING THE REAR OF AN ONCOMING VEHICLE.  THE ROAD WAS COMPLETELY CLOSED FOR 2 HOURS WHILE THE FATAL ACCIDENT WAS INVESTIGATED. THE VICTIM’S IDENTITY IS BEING WITHHELD PEND NOTIFICATION OF FAMILY MEMBERS.

 A WATSONVILLE MAN WAS DURING A SHOOTING ON SATURDAY. AT AROUND 7:20 P-M WATSONVILLE POLICE ARRIVED AT THE SCENE OF A REPORTED DRIVE BY SHOOTING ON THE FIST BLOCK OF ROOSEVELT STREET. OFFICERS FOUND A VICTIM DESCRIBED AS CONSCIOUS, BUT UNCOOPERATIVE WITH SEVERAL BULLET WOUNDS TO THE UPPER TORSO. THE VICTIM WAS LIFE FLIGHTED TO A BAY AREA TRAUMA CENTER. ALTHOUGH WITNESSES PROVIDED A DESCRIPTION OF THE SUSPECT VEHICLE NO ARREST HAVE BEEN MADE. ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION IS ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT THE WATSONVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

A WOMAN WAS STRUCK AND KILLED BY A TRAIN IN SALINAS ON SATURDAY.   AT ABOUT 6:20 P-M SALINAS POLICE INVESTIGATED A REPORT OF A PEDESTRIAN HIT BY A TRAIN NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF THE RAILWAY AND THE 8-HUNDRED BLOCK OF WEST MARKET STREET.     OFFICERS ON SCENE FOUND THE BODY OF A LATINA WOMAN IN HER EARLY 40’S.   THE DEATH IS BEING INVESTIGATED AS A SUICIDE.  THE VICTIM’S IDENTITY IS BEING WITH HELD PENDING NOTIFICATION OF FAMILY MEMBERS.

2 GREENFIELDMEN WERE ARRESTED ON THURSDAY.   GREENFIELD POLICE INVESTIGATED A REPORT OF AN ILLEGAL POT GROWING OPERATION.  AT AROUND 12:30 P-M OFFICERS SEARCHED A HOME ON THE 2-HUNDRED BLOCK OF BEECH STREET.  THE RESIDENCE HAD BEEN TURNED INTO A GROW FACILITY.  25 POUNDS OF LEAF AND 125 PLANTS WERE SEIZED.  30 YEAR OLD CODY LIPPE AND 32 YEAR OLD JULIO CHAVEZ WERE BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY JAIL ON FELONY CULTIVATION AND SALES CHARGES.

A HEARING AT THE SACRAMENTO SUPERIOR COURT TODAY (FRI) WILL ADDRESS A CAMPAIGN AGAINST A CO-ED BATHROOM BILL.   THE COURT WILL DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT COUNTIES CAN WITHHOLD OVER 130-THOUSAND SIGNATURES THAT ARE IN FAVOR OF OVERTURNING A-B 12-66.   EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE SECRETARY OF STATE SAID THE REFERENDUM FAILED DUE TO A LACK OF VALID SIGNATURES.    UPON INVESTIGATION, VOLUNTEERS OF THE REFERENDUM CAMPAIGN FOUND MANY OF THE SIGNATURES WERE WRONGLY INVALIDATED.    THE STATE IS ARGUING THAT THE SIGNATURES CANNOT BE TURNED OVER DUE TO VOTER CONFIDENTIALITY.   THE CO-ED BATHROOM BILL ENACTED LAST YEAR WOULD ALLOW STUDENTS TO CHOOSE BATHROOMS BASED ON THEIR SELF-IDENTIFIED GENDER.
