Dr. Joel Wallach

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article about mammograms. A show host from the Food Network has recently announced she has breast cancer. She is 48 years old and by U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines call for woman to start getting mamograms after age 50. Now she is urging women to get mamograms early because she believes it has saved her life. Other expert groups such as the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists all recommend annual mamograms starting at age 40. Dr. Wallach cites the statistics of how many false positive mamograms occur every year.

A woman was supposed to get surgery for TMJ but the surgeon performed a brain operation and she died from complications. Dr. Wallach cites the statistics of how nearly 16 million patients are infected, injured and killed every year in the U.S. Contending that Americans would not put up with this in any other industry. Asserting that if the airline industry hurt that many people no one would ever fly.

The article discussing nerve tangles, amyloid proteins and plaques. Ben asserts that new research is indicating that Alzheirmer's could actually be the third kind of diabetes.

Finding that people who had drinks sweetened with fructose were more likely to want to eat high calorie foods. While the same was not true for those drinking glucose sweetened drinks. Researchers believe this is because fructose does not stimulate hormones like insulin that triggers satiety in the brain.

Dr. Joel Wallach starts the show today discussing digestion. Stating that digestion actually starts in the mouth with chewing food into smaller pieces. The are also enzymes in the saliva that begin breaking foods down. Next the food travels to the stomach where the PH shouldn't be lower than 2. Contending if it is higher than a 2 PH when complex carbohydrate foods hit the stomach it ferments. Causing gas and belching as well as reflux in the stomach.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on an ebola study. Researchers found that ebola virus in a climate controlled environment of 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 40% humidity could survive for days. In fact in the controlled environment the virus lived for 11 days on Tyvek (material ebola suits are made from), eight days on plastic and four days on stainless steel. Also surviving for six days in water, four days in dried blood and 14 days in liquid blood (outside of the body).

The World Health Organization is predicting that by the year 2030 diabetes will be the seventh leading cause of death. The article cites several small studies that have shown taking supplemental turmeric can reduce the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Other studies have shown taking turmeric can actually prevent people who are pre-diabetic from going to full blown diabetes.
