Many Americans are confused, and would like to understand what led up to the bitterness that has existed in the Middle East between Arabs and Jews for more than a half century. One must go back to the early 1930s to learn that because of repeated references in the Old Testament, many older American Jews and other Jews from Eastern Europe had a lifelong yearning to go to the Holy Land called Yarooshaliem, which we call Jerusalem. Most stayed and purchased little parcels of land from the local Arabs. In time, many other Jews from Russia and other countries migrated to Jerusalem and also purchased parcels of land from local Arabs, land which at that time had been ruled by the British. Arabs and Jews got along well, and as society grew there were Arab and Jewish lawmakers who were equal citizens with equal rights who lived together peacefully side by side.

The Arabs who still live in Israel have equal rights, and some are in the Knesset and help make the laws of the country.

When the British decided to relinquish the area in 1948 for a Jewish state and an Arab state, the Jews accepted the British offer and declared their portion a State of Israel.

By the way, the word Palestinian was not invented until after the 1967 war.

The young Jewish state was instantly challenged by the surrounding Arab countries who declared war on Israel. Those governments urged all Arabs living in Israel to leave their homes and join their brethren to defeat Israel, saying that they could return to their Israeli homes after Israel was defeated. Well, that victory never happened, not in 1948, and not in the same Arab initiated war in 1967.

Tiny Israel from south to north in a car 12 hours, and from east to west about in four hours.

Astonishingly, Israel won both wars. I believe God intervened.

Strangely, in the entire world, when the victor wins, the victor keep the conquered land, but the law changes for Israelis and Jews. They are expected to return what they conquered. The world likes to call that land the occupied land when it really is the conquered land. Wouldn’t one think that the wealthy oil-rich Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Syria could easily absorb their displaced brethren who left Israel on their urging? Of course not. Instead those displaced Palestinians have been forced for five decades to live in camps and poverty while their own Arab brethren live in oil-rich luxury. Not one Arab country has been willing to absorb their displaced brethren who left their homes in 1948 when Israel urged them to stay. For those decades, the defeated Arab countries had been using their displaced brethren as political pawns to try to blame and embarrass Israel. Israel would surely not take them back now, not after they became Israel’s enemies. These displaced Arabs are victims created by their own brethren.

Enter Arafat the lying scoundrel who many times was offered a Palestinian State but refused. His only agenda was to annihilate Israelis. He invented the suicide bomber, a new kind of vicious warfare which has killed thousands of innocent Israelis and many gullible young Arabs.

One strange irony - if the Arabs living in Israel before the 1948 war had remained loyal to Israel and stayed, they would be the dominant political party now, because through over five decades they have reproduced many fold more than the Israelis.

The truth is that Israel citizens are largely homeless survivors of the Holocaust who yearned for a peaceful homeland but that wish has never been fulfilled.

One must admire the tiny democracy which turned centuries old arid land into the beautiful oasis supplying the world with oranges and human cures, the country which invented drip irrigation to the world and many other improvements for society, who want more than anything to live in peace. Israel is also on the cutting edge of stem cell research. Stem cells are more abundant there because in Judaism it is believed that the embryo becomes alive only after 40 days when the soul enters the fetus.

To conclude, Golda Meir, one of the early Prime Ministers of Israel, said “We can forgive the Arabs many things, but we cannot forgive that our sons have been forced to become killers.”

Download File The following is a KSCO commentary. Here is Kay Zwerling: About the forthcoming meeting at the Resource Center for Nonviolence, a nonsensical name for a group which revels in creating emotional violence all the time, leader Scott Kennedy chooses to invite speakers to spew their hate for Jews. Kennedy lost his credibility as a reasonable non-biased person when years ago it was reported that he made several visits to Israel to have an audience with the Palestinian leader and terrorist Arafat so he could kiss his ring and , by implication, compliment him for killing Israelis. Unlike many local Jewish community leaders, I am not outraged by the visit of Professor Norman Finkelstein. Probably I developed an early tolerance for bigots when as a little girl living in a Brooklyn, New York, German neighborhood in the early 1930s, I was scared and bewildered when often I was called ?a dirty little Jew girl?. I believe that Finkelstein, who minimizes the Holocaust and refers to Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel as a clown, and the highly respected Simon Wiesenthal Center as a gang of heartless and immoral crooks, is himself an irrational self-hating Jew who grew up in a Palestinian area where from early childhood he was educated to despise Jews. Inasmuch as he became a professor, he should have known better, but he opted to spread hate. Both Finkelstein and Scott Kennedy are to be pitied because both exist to disseminate venomous hate, the emotion which decays one’s own soul. What a blessing it is to live in a country where free speech exists. Despite others? protests, Scott Kennedy and Professor Finkelstein will continue to spread their poison, but will only infect bigots. While antisemitism is an incurable social disease, let us hope that those infected are in the minority. For KSCO and KOMY, this is Kay Zwerling. Copyright 2006 Kay Zwerling

The following is an encore presentation. A KSCO commentary. Here is Kay Zwerling:

For some time a primary irritation of mine has been the arrogant and stupid edict created by liberal extremists who about 25 years ago ordained that we all should abide by their rules of social behavior which they decided to call political correctness. I never bought into that rigid humorless nonsense. And now most of us who think with logic and not with liberal selective feelings can see the destructive havoc political correctness has created. Much of the damage has been to our children many of whom are adults who are spoiled bewildered and dependent – the ones I have said were cheated out of having any parameters.

And now the religious aspect of political correctness. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate everyone was expecting the usual generalities but this is what they heard:

“Heavenly Father we come before You today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says ‘Woe to those who call evil good’ but that’s exactly what we have done. We’ve lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that we have ridiculed absolute truth of Your Word and call it pluralism. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it Welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbors’ possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us O God and know our hearts today and cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen.”

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In six short weeks Central Christian Church where Reverend Wright is Pastor logged more than 5 000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India Africa and Korea. If possible please pass this prayer on to your friends. If you don’t stand for something you will fall for everything.

Coming from New York, this little slice of Heaven was unbelievable, peaceful, and beautiful ? a welcome bit of culture shock after life in the Big City. The then two-page Sentinel News at that time delighted us, because the most exciting item of news was that Mrs. So-and-so went over to San Jose yesterday. What a great place it was to raise a young family. MZ came along three years later with a virtual radio in his little hands. Then, at that time, homes had intercoms in all rooms, and I would wake the children with KGO, one of the early trailblazers of interactive news talk radio. We used to wonder how come this paradise had not yet been discovered by others, and, of course, we were glad. The population of the City was 12,500. People from the very hot valley came here to retire and to die, but they did not die because our climate was so moderate and life was so peaceful and happy. In the 1940s, back east, people died at the old age of 62. So, here again, it delighted my optometric husband when a 75-year-old woman came in to be examined, and when she was finished she asked if he had time to examine her 95-year-old mother waiting in the car. What can I say ? all things considered, life was good then People liked each other. Then came the University, and the educated elitists, and everything changed. Some of the professors brought along (their extended) families, and they wanted to close the gates of Santa Cruz. They also brought their new left philosophies and began to impose the same upon their students, and the City, and the County. Now, we have sometimes vicious political polarization ? the fanatic left want to lead, as I say, the City and the County, and because once they got here, they wanted to stop growth ? all growth. So, for the past 40 years, no growth became the leftist leaders? agenda. They became business unfriendly, and we have been going downhill ever since. Our business and social reputation in the Country and the world are totally negative ? and we are totally broke ? and now our leaders want business to come back to Santa Cruz. How simplistic. Their restrictions and regulations chased business away for decades. Now, they hire experts to come and evaluate what they should be doing to stimulate business. Well, the latest expert came and was paid $50,000 just to tell the City Council that the trouble with Santa Cruz is that it is business unfriendly. Duh. Many of us who live here have told that to our liberal leaders for years, for nothing. So, this is the saga of well-meaning, foolish, misguided Santa Cruz political leaders. And, about controlling growth, it becomes more crowded every day. For KSCO and KOMY, this is Kay Zwerling. Copyright 2005
